Questions you might have
God is holy, and we are not. We gather each Lord’s Day not because we are better than anyone else but because we are sinners who need a Savior, and God, by grace alone, has given one in His Son, Jesus Christ. Our worship is not a performance. It is a simple, reverent service of Scripture, prayer, Psalms and hymns, the preached Word and the Lord’s Supper, as we come before a holy God to hear Him speak and strive to offer Him acceptable worship, with reverence and awe (Hebrews 12:28).
We fall short, and we know it, so we rest not on ourselves but on the gospel of grace alone in Christ; our pastors and elders serve among us as fellow sinners under that same grace. Whoever you are and wherever you have been, you are welcome to come and sit under the Word with us.
What time should I come?
Each Sunday our worship service begins at 10:00 AM. Come a few minutes early to find a seat and collect your thoughts before we begin. You are welcome to sit wherever you would like.
What should I wear?
In worship we come before the King of kings, so we encourage you to dress with that in mind, modestly and with reverence. You’ll see some in their Sunday best and others dressed more simply, and some women wear head coverings while others do not. None of that keeps anyone from the Word, and you will find welcoming faces.
What should I expect in the service?
Worship is held upstairs in the sanctuary. The service reflects our Protestant and Reformation roots: prayers, confession, Scripture readings, hymns and Psalms, a sermon, and the Lord’s Supper every Lord’s Day. Everything you need is printed in the bulletin you’ll receive when you come. You can follow along or simply observe.
Is there an offering?
Our offerings are for those who consider Old Goshenhoppen their home and who are part of the mission here. As a guest, you are not expected to give; we want you to receive.
What is there for my kids?
We love to have the whole family together in worship. Children stay with their parents through the whole service, hearing the same Word preached and learning to worship alongside their mothers and fathers. There is also Children’s Sunday School (seasonal) at 9 AM.
How do I get there and where do I park?
There is a large parking lot across from the church and handicap parking right next to it. A ramp and chair lift are available.
Where can I meet people?
Stay for the communal meal after worship on most Sundays. Throughout the year there are a variety of gatherings as well, including a monthly men’s night, a women’s study, Youth Group every other Sunday evening, and fellowship events across the church calendar.
What does “Reformed” mean?
We are part of a family of churches that goes back to the Reformation of the 1500s, when the churches of Europe were called back to the Scriptures as the only rule for faith and life. Our name reflects that heritage.
What’s with the name Old Goshenhoppen?
In the Bible, Goshen was the land in Egypt where God settled Israel and provided for them before He brought them into the Promised Land (Genesis 45:10; 47:27). The settlers likened this new land to Goshen, a place of God’s provision while they were sojourners, and hoppen is the German word for haven. An older tradition also links the name to Shakahoppa, a Lenape chief whose lands lay along the Perkiomen Creek. Our area, closer to Philadelphia, was settled earlier and so was called Old Goshenhoppen; the area around East Greenville was settled later and called New Goshenhoppen.
